English Language Arts 2019-2020
My name is Mrs. Toole and I will be your English teacher for the 2019-2020 school year. I am proud to be a part of Clark-Pleasant Middle School where our school has a long tradition of being named a 4-star school; this is always a wonderful accomplishment. As I get to know each of you, I too want to continue with those same 4-star expectations so each of you will have a successful learning year. I encourage you to let your parents be an important part of your education - keep them informed and involved. For both you and your parents, feel free to consult this website daily for important class information. If ever you need to contact me, email is a great way to communicate. As the year progresses, I look forward to getting to know each of you better!
Classroom Supplies
Materials - 3-ring binder, paper, pencils/pens, student agenda, composition notebook, Chromebook, and SSR book are required daily. Additionally, a set of highlighters (4 different colors) is highly recommended, and a donation of one bag of candy would be greatly appreciated for incentives for the students. Students definitely appreciate this!
Classroom Expectations
Warrior Way -You are expected to set high standards for yourself by following the CPMS Code of Ethics by being present, pro-active, responsible, respectful, and positive in all that you do at school.
Areas of Responsibility/CPMS Policies - You need to become familiar with all the “areas of responsibility” and all other CPMS policies (located in student handbook) regarding attendance, tardiness, behavior, and discipline.
Chromebook - You will be responsible for having your Chromebook in class every day. Make certain your Chromebook battery is charged daily, don't share your password, and remember that your Chromebook is to be used for educational purposes.
Make-up/Late Work - You need to take responsibility for locating, collecting, and submitting make-up/late work.
ELs/Scales - Although you will no longer receive scaled scores (1-4), scales will be used as a prominent resource in guiding instruction, communicating, and building assessments. If you need additional support to master an EL, you will be assigned to a FIT session.
Classwork/Homework - You will find classwork/homework posted daily on the agenda board and on Google Classroom.
What About My Grade?
ELA grades will be based on essential learning objectives, each weighted differently. In 7th grade, there will be 6 ELs, and in 8th grade, there will be 7 ELs.

What About My Grade?
ELA grades will be based on essential learning objectives, each weighted differently. In 7th grade, there will be 6 ELs, and in 8th grade, there will be 7 ELs.
- You will receive individual EL scores as in the past; however, scores will be based on points and reported out as letter grades.
- The CPCSC grading scale will be used: 90-100 (A); 80-89 (B); 70-79 (C); 60-69 (D), and 59-below (F).
- Each assessment will be weighted as a 1, 2, or 3 based on its significance to the EL. Weighted 3 assessments carry the most weight.
- Power Law will no longer be used; therefore, the 3 data point requirement/opportunity will be gone. Instead a retake will be offered.
- Retakes will be offered on weighted 3 assessments only, and will be teacher guide and student earned.
- In order to qualify for a retake, you must take advantage of remediation opportunities (i.e. FIT, study guides, IXL, test corrections, etc.).
- The retake score will be the average of the original assessment and the retake.
